Cairns, Australia — Where the Rainforest Meets the Reef
"It's not dangerous if you know what you're doing.
Larry mostly knows what he's doing."
Lars — "Amazing Larry" to anyone who's spent more than five minutes with him — has been roaming the rainforests, creek beds, and cane fields around Cairns for the better part of three decades. He'll tell you he's a "scientist," though his credentials are more aggressively self-taught than formally awarded.
What he lacks in framed certificates he more than makes up for in genuine obsession. Ask him about any snake in Far North Queensland and he'll talk for forty-five minutes. Ask him about the flora and he'll talk for an hour. He has never, to anyone's knowledge, been wrong about either.
His tours are small, personal, and genuinely unforgettable. Equal parts education, adventure, and stand-up comedy.
"The rainforest doesn't care about your schedule. Let's go find something incredible."
All tours depart from Cairns CBD. Small groups of 2–8 people. Larry drives, Larry guides, Larry tells the stories.
Far North Queensland is one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth. No two days in the field are ever the same.
"Larry picked up a carpet python off the track, showed it to us for five minutes — explained its diet, its breeding cycle, the camouflage strategy — then put it back exactly where it had been. My kids still talk about it three years later."
"I'm a botanist with a PhD and Larry taught me things I didn't know. His knowledge of the medicinal and food plants in the Daintree is extraordinary. Whatever he charges, it should be more."
"He found a platypus. He FOUND A PLATYPUS. 'Oh I know where they are,' he said, like it was nothing. Coolest moment of my life. Book this man. Book him immediately."
"The Snakey Nights tour was honestly terrifying in the best possible way. Larry is equal parts wildlife guide and stand-up comedian. That man has a gift. And his damper bread? Life-changing."
"We hired Larry for a bespoke private tour focused on herps and photography. He found us six snake species in one afternoon. SIX. And he knew every single one by name — scientific and common. Absolutely exceptional."
"My mother is 74. She walks slowly. Larry was patient, kind, kept the pace perfect, and made sure she saw everything. She says it was the highlight of her trip to Australia. He's just a genuinely good person who loves what he does."

Larry keeps his phone on him in the field — he'll get back to you same day. Groups of 8+ should enquire at least two weeks ahead. Solo and small group bookings can often be accommodated within a few days.
